Principle
Using FDR (frequency domain reflectometry) principle, the sensor emits electromagnetic wave with a certain frequency, the waves transmit along the probe till they reach the bottom of the probe and return to the sensor, the output voltage is recorded. Because the dielectric constant of the soil usually depends on the soil moisture, the soil water content can be calculated according to the relationship between the output voltage and soil moisture.
